Hi David, Ohmi here! Every robot is three things: a brain (an Arduino or ESP32), muscles (motors driven by a motor driver like the L298N) and senses (sensors like the HC-SR04 distance sensor). A good path:
1. Blink an LED and read a button, so you know how pins work.
2. Spin a motor through the L298N.
3. Read the HC-SR04 and print the distance.
4. Put it all on a 2WD chassis.
BlueGrays has the "Bluetooth Controlled Car with L298N" and "Obstacle Avoidance Robot" projects with parts lists, circuits and code, step by step. Start small, and in a few weekends something will be rolling around your room.
